Stephanie Krimmel, Concept sketch for "Coming In, Going Out" mural, 2025

Coming In/Going Out is a non-traditional mural capturing the ebb and flow of Elliott Bay’s tides over a five day period. The 12-foot height of the mural allows the tide’s rise and fall to be depicted at life size, creating an impactful experiential representation of this natural phenomenon.
The mural will be constructed using approximately 4000-5000 custom-printed cards, each measuring 5.5 inches square. These postcards will be bound together as accordion books and attached to the wall in a corrugated pattern. This approach creates a three-dimensional surface that appears to shift and change depending on the viewer’s perspective.
Each card will be an individual work of art from my daily art practice, which explores themes of environment, time and place. Alternatively, this could become a community project, inviting submissions from artists and communities that have strong ties to tidal areas around Seattle and the Salish Sea.
Dimensions: 60 feet long x variable height (max 12 feet)
Materials: Between 4000 and 5000 custom-printed cards (each 5.5 inches square), linen tape, mounting hardware
Installation: Cards will be bound into accordion books and affixed to the wall or backing substrate with pins or nails in a corrugated pattern.
